Big Announcement!!!

If you're a crazy quilter, you are undoubtedly familiar with the beautiful work of Pat Winter.  And if you follow her blog and read her Crazy Quilt Gatherings magazine, you are probably already aware that she has decided to retire as owner and publisher at the end of this year.

I am excited to announce that I am the new owner and publisher of Pat's beautiful magazine!!!  I'm honored, I'm thrilled and I'm bouncing off the walls!!!!

If you're new to my blog, I thought I'd share a little bit of background in my needlework career.  My mother and grandmother taught me to stitch when I was about 7 or 8 years old.  I'm 52 now and have been stitching ever since.  I caught the counted cross stitch bug back in the 80's and when I couldn't find a pattern suitable for a gift, I decided to chart out my own idea.  I liked doing it and decided to chart out a few more of my design ideas.  Back in those days, I worked on graph paper with colored pencils.

I did a design with a snowman and an original poem that I wrote.  This was 1989 and my husband was quite taken with it.  He suggested that I send it to a magazine to see if they might publish it.  I took his advice, on a whim actually, and sent to Leisure Arts.  I was floored when they called me several weeks later with an offer to purchase my design.  What a rush that was for me!

I continued to create more designs, on graph paper with colored pencils and submitted them to other magazines.  One by one, they sold.  Eventually, my husband told me I needed a computer so in 1996, we went out and bought a computer and I started designing full time.

I worked with many needlework magazines both national and international.  I worked with manufacturers including The DMC Corporation, Zweigart, Charles Craft, Kreinik, Bucilla and others.  I published many of my own designs and sold them in my Etsy store.

In 2002, a friend of mine sent me a copy of Quilting Arts magazine and in that issue, I discovered the elegant art of Contemporary Crazy Quilting.  I was well aware of the history behind Crazy Quilting.  I frequent antique shops and flea markets and have seen many of the Victorian examples that still exist.  I was always drawn to them because of my love for needlework but when I discovered, that my collection of treasures, old lace, beads, buttons and vintage jewelry, could be sewn onto a crazy quilt, well....I was hooked.  And I loved the freedom, the "no rules" approach to crazy quilting.

I retired from designing counted cross stitch in 2009 to pursue my love of crazy quilting and to have more of a hands on experience.  I love to stitch!  I need to stitch!  I need to create so I redirected my Etsy shop from my cross stitch patterns to my stitched items, along with handmade things by my mom and my sister.

One aspect of crazy quilting that always eluded me was keeping my stitches even and straight.  I guess I was so used to working on a grid that when it came to doing free hand stitching, I was lost!  It occurred to me that I could apply my cross stitch skills to crazy quilting and decided to try using waste canvas for stitching my borders.  Well, this opened a whole new world of charting patterns so I went back to my cross stitch software and started charting out border designs.  Elegant Crazy Quilt Seam Treatments was born!  It was huge hit with other crazy quilters who struggled with keeping their stitches straight and even, so 2 more volumes came along.

Then I did a couple of other instructional books and a 9 block class series called, Crazy Quilt Color & Composition.  All are published at Magcloud where Pat publishes her beautiful magazine.

When I read that Pat was going to retire, I inquired about taking over Crazy Quilt Gatherings.  It seems that the stars were in alignment for both of us.  I'm so excited!!!  But enough about me.  I just thought you'd like to know a little bit about my background.

I'll talk more about this exciting news tomorrow.  For now, a special thank you to Pat for entrusting her gorgeous magazine with me.  Please continue to submit your articles and eye candy photos to her for now.  She has 3 more issues to fill with your wonderful stitching and ideas!!!

Peacock Purse Almost Done

I thought you would enjoy a little update on my current Crazy Quilt project:

The peacock's tail will overhang the side of the purse.  When I sew this together, I'll have to pin the tail feathers up so they don't get caught in the side seams.

I have a little more stitching to do on this but I expect to have it ready to sew together tomorrow.

In other news, Pat Winter has released the Spring 2014 issue of her Crazy Quilt Gatherings Magazine:

This is available at Magcloud.

And the Shabby Lane Shops Spring issue is now available as well:

In this issue, I've shared my mom's Irish Soda Bread recipe which is absolutely to die for!  The magazine can be ordered through Shabby Lane Shops.

Shabby Lane Shops also offers a Free EMag:

If you love Cottage Style, you'll enjoy looking through this.  But be sure to pour yourself a cup of a tea.  You won't want to stop looking!

Inspired By Pat Winter

I have always loved the work of Pat Winter.  I discovered her work years ago on Art-E-Zine.  Once she started blogging, I followed her religiously and still do to this day.  Pat's delicate embroidered crazy quilting, in soft Victorian hues can calm and quiet the busiest of minds!

I was quite taken with Pat's Embellished Brooches.  Beautiful Victorian images surrounded by needle felting, silk ribbon embroidery, beads, sequins and charms.  Here is an example of Pat's work:

Is this stunning or what?!!!!  Now I've been making needle felted heart brooches for a few years but Pat's pretty ones kept showing up on Pinterest and I finally asked her if she minded if I made a few for my shop.  Now I have to tell you, in case you've never talked to her, Pat is absolutely delightful!  She is sweet as can be and quite generously told me that she didn't mind at all.  I truly felt that I had to ask her because I know she sells some of her handmade pieces in her Gatherings Etsy Shop.  I believe in being respectful and I didn't want to take away from her sales.  I just felt that it was proper etiquette to ask her first.

So, here are my newest embellished needle felted art brooches worked in the beautiful and elegant style of Pat Winter:

I really enjoy making the little heart brooches but I have to tell you, I love making these even more!  And I am planning on doing a few more but I need to do some crazy quilting first.  Thank you so much Pat!

If anyone is interested in making some of these, Pat offers a tutorial in her shop:

You can find the Instant Download for Felting And Embellishing A Brooch here.

And speaking of crazy quilting, I spent all day yesterday running my treadle sewing machine.  I'm sure I put a good couple of miles on it!  I sewed up a ton of purses, a pillow and a door hanger.  So have loads of new things in the works.

Finally, on a sad note, my mom lost her beloved Chooch this morning:

Chooch was the most wonderful and gorgeous black lab.  In her earlier years, she was a therapy dog.  Mom would take her to the local retirement center and she would visit with the residents there.  Chooch was awesome at that!  My mom gave her a wonderful life and she lived to be over 14 years old.  I will miss her terribly.

Sewing and Brooches

I spent all morning and part of the afternoon sewing up the example blocks from the online Crazy Quilt class that I taught last year.  They will be little door hangers.  All I have left to do is stuff them and do the hand finishing.  I expect to have photos of those ready tomorrow so please stop back to see them.  They're gorgeous!

In the meantime, here are 2 more needle felted brooches that I made:

There are more coming!  I have 4 more of them in the works!  Special thanks to my sweet friend Pat Winter for her inspiration!

Crazy Quilt Gatherings Magazine

I was thrilled when Pat asked me to do the cover design for the Summer issue of her Crazy Quilt Gatherings Magazine!  I wanted to do something really cool and different so I decided on a cat!  After all, what says Kitty & Me more than cat!

Going back to my background in cross stitch design, I charted a pretty little kitty face and worked my crazy quilt project around that.  The pattern for the cat face is available in this issue.

And here is a photo of the quilt:

And a closeup of the kitty face:

If you would like to order a copy of Pat's beautiful Crazy Quilt Gatherings magazine, you can find it at Magcloud.

Hanging Pillow With Doll

You might remember this little hanging pillow that I made last week?  I think it was last week!  Honestly, I can't remember what I did 5 minutes ago so your guess is as good as mine!  LOL!!

Anyway, I sewed it together yesterday and finished it:

I think this is just too cute!  The little doll is re-moveable.  I have some in different colors so I think I'll make a few more come Spring.

In other news, Pat Winter's Winter 2012 issue of Crazy Quilt Gatherings magazine is now available at Magcloud.  The cover photo is gorgeous, isn't it?

Finally for today, Kathy Shaw has posted a tutorial on her blog for Little Finger Pincushions

Do hop over and check out Kathy's blog.  Gorgeous eye candy there!

White Cat Crazy Quilt

Here's an update on my White Cat Crazy Quilt project:

The yellow flowers on the vine to the left are little gathered Picot Edge Satin Ribbon flowers.  Picot edge ribbons are approx. 1/4 of an inch wide and available at any craft store.  They come in tons of colors but I like to dye my own so that they're slightly shaded.  Satin ribbons take to dyeing very well and I use Rit dye for these so it's very affordable to do.  To gather, just cute the ribbon into 5 inch lengths and do a running stitch along one edge.  Gather it up, tie it off and sew it on.  Easy as pie!

In other news, the Spring 2012 issue of Pat Winter's Gatherings magazine is now available:

Pat's magazine is a must have for Crazy Quilters, Embroiderer's and textile artists!  And it's a must for anyone who just likes to look at pretty pictures of needlework!  Gorgeous!

Finally for today, my latest YouTube video on my Crazy Quilt Purses.  Enjoy!

Pink Heart

I'm sitting here, all toasty warm, drinking coffee.  My new furnace is in and other than the bill, I'm a happy camper!

I did a lot of baking yesterday just to have the oven on.  A double batch of Chocolate Chip Muffins and a double batch of Cornbread Muffins.  My laundry is done too!  I did anything I could think of to get a little heat in house.  The installer had it running by 6 pm so I slept good last night.  No waking up at midnight, freezing and shivering!

Oh and my poor little kitties.  They kept looking at me like, "MOM!  What's up with this no heat thing?!!"  I had Nightmare and Simba wrapped up in quilts on the bed and I had Lucy out here with me on the heating pad with my stitching lamp shining on her.

I felt so bad for them.  They're all older and have some health problems.  Nightmare is has a heart condition, Simba has Colitis and Lucy had that stroke just before Christmas.  And I hate that I can't explain things to them.  But I managed to keep them warm as best as I could and they're no worse for the wear today.

In between baking, I did do some stitching.  This will be a little heart shaped door hanging pillow:

I used the corner of a vintage hankie for the center.  I think it needs some vintage Mother Of Pearl buttons now!

In other news, the Spring issue of Pat Winter's Gatherings magazine is now available for purchase:

Is that a gorgeous cover or what?!!!  Preview and order from Magcloud.

Have a Happy Valentine's Day everyone!

Needful Things

My sweet friend Pat Winter always refers to crazy quilt supplies as "needful things".  Ok, so I stopped at my favorite stitching store yesterday afternoon, Welcome Stitchery in Crystal Lake, Illinois.  I needed waste canvas.  And I of course came out with more than just that!

My favorite threads to stitch with are the Watercolours by The Caron Collection.  These are a 3 ply thread and I use a single strand which is pretty equal to a #5 perle cotton.  I love the shaded threads and since I have a tendency to pile on the embellishments, I like a little bit heavier thread so my stitching shows up!  So, I needed 3 new colors of that.

My second favorite threads are the Kreinik metallics!  I needed (I really did) a gold #4 braid but I've also been collecting the Hologram Blending Filaments for my spider webs.  So I picked up the silver and the red Hologram Blending Filament and those are my needful things for the day!  It's my story and I'm sticking to it!

When I got home, I started stitching a little cellphone pouch:

I thought I'd make a few cellphone pouches for Christmas gifts.  And speaking of my sweet friend Pat, purples and greens always make me think of her!

Here's the news on my dad, so far, none of the test results found anything abnormal.  They're going to do one more test, and if that's normal, then it was most likely a small kidney stone.  Mom is already trying to get him to drink more water!

Thank you everyone for keeping him in your thoughts.

Crazy Marie Antoinette Quilt To Begin

I haven't been feeling well for the past few days.  I don't know if it's the medication balancing out again or what.  I'm so tired of trying to figure it out and trying to describe it.  I can definitely feel the depression but I don't care to increase the medication.  It just means that I'd have to deal with more withdrawals when I can cut back again.

I decided that now is the perfect time to start on my Winter project.  I pulled out block #1 of my Marie Antoinette quilt and I will start stitching on this today:

If you're new to my blog, I have Seasonal Affective Disorder and have found that a Winter project, helps me to get through the nasty Winter months until Spring.  This quilt has 9 blocks, all featuring an image of Marie Antoinette.  I love the pinks and other soft pastel colors.  There will be loads of lace and glittery things on this quilt.  Tons of flowers and vines.  I have some special do-dads that my friend Cathy K. sent to me that I've been saving for this project.  One is a little Eiffel Tower charm!
I finished stitching up on this crazy quilt piece yesterday:

I'm going to try to get this piece in the frame today and then I'll add it to the shop.

Another finish is this little cat doll:

This was a custom order.  I really love making these little cats.  I think I'll sew up a few more this week and just have them ready for when I feel like stitching on one.

A few more things that I added to the shop are more of my glittered bottlebrush trees:

And here are a few of mom's newest items:

All are available here.

Don't forget about the drawing for my Crazy Quilt Snowflake Ornament.  Details can be found here on this post.
http://kittyandmedesigns.blogspot.com/2010/10/drawing.html

I guess that's my news for today folks.  I'll be posting regular updates of my Marie quilt as I work on it so stop by often for that.

I'll leave you with some muffins that I made the other day:

Guest Blogger - Pat Winter

Hello everyone!  It's the 15th of the month and that means that I have another Guest Blogger to introduce to you.  If you love Crazy Quilting, you undoubtedly already know my next guest but if you're new to crazy quilting, this charming lady and her work will be a real treat for you!

I first saw Pat's work years and years ago at Art-E-Zine.  I instantly fell in love with her breathtakingly beautiful crazy quilt pieces. Her eye for color and composition is exquisite!  Eventually, Pat started blogging and I was thrilled to be able to see her new projects on a weekly basis.  As time went on, we became blog friends.  I so much admire Pat's work as I know you will.  Please welcome, Pat Winter.

Hi! My name is Patricia Winter and I am a crazy quilt addict. I am honored to be invited as a Guest blogger by my fellow crazy quilter and sweet friend, Pam. I met Pam online several years ago on a stitching group and greatly admire her talent.

I have always been creative as a child and as an adult my creative muse has taken over my world. Twenty nine years ago I began cross stitching then a few years later I learned patchwork hand quilting from my mother in law then I discovered crazy quilting in the 80’s and in 2001, after the passing of my father I dove head first into crazy quilting and fiber art creating something weekly. I discovered online stitch groups, began submitting work to magazines to be published, joined the staff of CQMagonline, started my own website and self published my own book to share an art that I enjoy so much hoping others would try it for themselves. My website at the moment can be found here. This may be closed soon since I’ve learned I can add pages to my blog which can be found here.

I was born and reside in Chesterton Indiana near the Dunes where I take advantage of walking along the shores along Lake Michigan collecting “Mermaid tears”, (sea glass) with my mother as often as possible.
I live in a 130 year old Victorian farmhouse with my husband of soon to be 30 years and our son who is responsible for me being an online presence .Without my son, aka “Computer guru”, I would not have any interest in computers which means I would not have found all of the wonderful creative souls out there many of which have become wonderful friends. We share our home with a 13 year old long hair Chihuahua named Angell who pretty much rules the house as some of you know.

After six years of lecturing and teaching at local quilt guilds and the Chesterton Art I decided to teach from my home. Hauling class supplies and samples to each event was exhausting .Last year with the help of my husband I converted my summer kitchen off my back deck into a class room to offer lessons in crazy quilting to anyone curious to learn more about my passion.

What is a “summer kitchen? When the heat of summer descended, before the days of widespread rural electrification, many a farm’s culinary captain moved the cook stove out of the house and into a smaller single-room building called the summer kitchen. It was a wonderful purpose-built structure where the year’s canning, preserving, pickling and processing all took place on a wood-fired stove that generated enough excess heat to chase anyone out of the main house.

My 130 year old brick summer kitchen, previously used as my potting shed is slowly getting a makeover by covering the interior walls with vintage lace tablecloths as I find them at estate sales. I moved in a 1950’s pink and white iron table set found at a yard sale last year as the work area. I have included a snack area consisting of a vintage porcelain top table which I painted pink, a small refrigerator, coffee maker and microwave for class refreshments which comes in handy for the eight hour classes.

I keep class size to no more than four students so each receives one on one time which is necessary because there are so many applications used in crazy quilting. Although I do offer color coordinated kits for several classes, I don’t teach color association. I teach the piecing and embellishing process because I feel the student should use what is beautiful to them. That is a personal choice and is not my decision.
The class room is modestly stocked with my hand dyed silk ribbons and some printed images for purchase. I have a few additional supplies such as silk thread, however my mission is to teach, not sell retail.

My home is in the country yet conveniently located 3 miles from the Indiana Toll way and the Hilton, an hour from Chicago and 6 miles from I-94. There is a campground across the creek behind my home and
there are several hotels and Inns around my area making it convenient to attend two day classes. I teach from May through October. The past nine months I’ve enjoyed meeting creative women as we sew, laugh and share stories.

I have taught several beginner classes, a dye class, clutch purse class and embellishment class so far. I am currently preparing a class to construct a crazy quilt eyeglass case and learn how to adjust any pattern to attach a metal purse frame with beads. I organize classes to meet the students’ needs and in many classes, I offer customized kits so everyone is working with the colors and theme they enjoy. Although this is time consuming for me, it has been a time saver in class and enjoyed by all students. If interested in class fees or information on current or possible future classes you may email me with your inquiries and we will set up a convenient class time for you and up to three friends. My email address is angell100@comcast.net.

My personal creative space is a spare bedroom in my home. I spend a lot of time in here.

I also love gardening which is where I gain a lot of inspiration for my crazy quilting. Sitting in the garden having tea and stitching is a common activity around here.

My favorite crazy quilt projects are purses or useful everyday items. I’ve only made three large crazy quilt wall hangings. My purple quilt titled, “Life Within A Garden”, won the CQ category in the $100,000 Quilting magazine contest. It also won the blue ribbon at our local fair last year which was even more
exciting because I haven’t entered anything in a fair since my 4-H days many years ago.

The other two wall hangings were commission pieces, one I recently finished for a woman in NY.

I enjoy any CQ work however my mind is always conjuring up new ideas so I don’t want to spend all my time on one project. There are too many beautiful fabrics and embellishments to play with and explore.
Clutches are really fun to make and use. These are some of my favorites.

I use fabric images on almost everything I do. I feel they add life and you can pull your colors and theme from beautiful images. I buy copyright free image discs and download images from etsy sellers to use in my work.

Since I have collected stash for as long as I can remember I am selective when purchasing new supplies. My favorite “stash” item is vintage lace. I love to find a new use for the delicate and sometimes stained treasure which makes it all the more special to incorporate into my work.

My favorite online stash sources are:

Kreinik threads - http://www.kreinik.com
Flights of fancy - http://www.flightsoffancyboutique.com
Cartwright sequins - http:// www.ccartwright.com
Etsy and Artfire

My favorite brick & mortar shops are:

Fabrics- Vogue Fabrics http://www.myvoguefabrics.com
Everything under the sun! Tisha’s Needlework Studio 3979 N Oak St. Metamora, MI 48455-9769

I recently enjoyed my first visit to Tisha’s and was thrilled at my discovery. Aside from crazy quilting, Tisha is an amazing Brazilian needle artist and such a generous and warm hearted woman.

I recently won first place in the crazy quilting category for a heart ornament in the July issue of Piecework’s magazine.

That was truly a surprise and honor because the work I see in Piecework magazine is such high quality unique projects.
