McHenry Historical Crazy Quilt Block #20

Another block for the Mchenry Historical Crazy Quilt - this is the Samantha Button house built in 1854 and located on Waukegan St. Again I couldn't find a historical photo so I grabbed a screenshot from Google earth and oldened it in Photoshop.

Samantha Button was the daughter of William McCollom one of the very earliest settlers to McHenry Illinois. She was born in 1830 and came to Mchenry with her family in 1834. The only building in town was a log cabin located on the present site of The Riverside Hotel.

Her family continued west and made their home on the west bank of the lake named for them, McCullom Lake.

Samantha died in 1934 at 103 years old. Until her death, she was the oldest living mother of a civil war soldier. Her son died of typhoid during the war and is buried in Woodlawn cemetary here in McHenry.

This quilt will be a record of the historical buildings in McHenry. I'm still in Gagetown (the Main Street area) so theres a ways to go yet!

This quilt is pieced and embroidered entirely by hand. All lace is vintage or antique. The only embellishments are some vintage Mother Of Pearl buttons used to make the spider bodies. Spiders and spiderwebs are a traditional motif on antique crazy quilts. The Victorians believed that spiders were good luck so there is a spider on every block of my quilt.

I will be using this quilt to benefit the McHenry Area Historical Society. Preserving Mchenry's history is very important to me.

Next block - I'll be taking a little buggy ride (LOL) over to Centerville (Green St.) and doing the Owen Bros. Mill. Built in 1840. And I do have a real photo of it!!

Here's a photo of all the blocks together so far:

There's at least another 20 blocks to go so this quilt will be quite large!!

Embroidered Door Hangers

I've been busy working on the Spring issue of Crazy Quilt Quarterly magazine.  I'm running late on it due to the holidays.  So please forgive me for not posting much lately.  As soon as I'm done with it, I'll get back to the Never Ending Sampler Stitch-Along and all the other things that I usually post about.

I've been doing some stitching and enjoying my collection of vintage iron-on embroidery patterns:

These are Crayon Tinted and then embroidered.  I sewed them together over the weekend.  My husband was kind enough to stuff them for me!!!

I have more pieces to sew together and will post them when I have them done.

For now, I have to get back to the magazine so I have it ready for everyone on February 1st!

Crazy Quilt Journals And Greeting Cards

I've been thinking for  quite awhile now, about opening a Cafe Press Shop and using some of my crazy quilt pieces on greeting cards and journals.

It's taken me all day to just to figure out the site and how to list products.  Not nearly as easy as Etsy and Ebay but I finally figured it out!  I still have some work to do but I have a good start now!

I started with some of my Christmas projects thinking that someone might want to have some unique Christmas Cards!  I'm going to order some for myself too!

These are blank greeting cards meaning you can add your own message inside.  They can be ordered as single cards or in groups of 10 and groups of 20.  These designs are also available on Journals!

When I have time, I'll add some everyday cards and journals and maybe try some of the other products.

For now, here is the link if you're interested in some really cool Christmas Cards for your stitching friends!  http://www.cafepress.com/kittyandmedesigns

Free Crazy Quilt Blog Background

I've been playing around with creating my own blog backgrounds.  I've done a couple but this morning, decided to do a crazy quilt design.

If you would like to use this on your blog as well, please be my guest:

Copy and paste this code in your HTML gadget:

<style type="text/css">
body { background-image : url(https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4339/35553708674_0a26d16e49_o.jpg); background-position: center; background-repeat: no-repeat;  background-attachment : fixed; }
</style>

<script type="text/javascript">
var div = document.createElement('div');
div.setAttribute('style',"position: absolute; left: 0px; top: 30px; z-index: 50; width: 150px; height: 45px;");
div.innerHTML = '<a target="_blank" href=" "></a>';
document.getElementsByTagName('body').item(0).appendChild(div);
</script>

I'll do a few more when I have time.  I only know how to do these for Blogspot.  If you have a different blog venue, I'm afraid I can't help.  If you have any trouble with this, please let me know.

Enjoy!

Umbrella Wall Quilt Update

I'm making progress on my latest little wall quilt.  I started on this last week:

If you click on the photo to make it larger, you should be able to see the umbrella design.  I have all of the pink flowers stitched now, thanks to mom who had an extra skein of DMC variegated thread #48!  I thought I had another skein but I was wrong!  Oh well, wouldn't be the first time!!

In other news, I was sitting here this morning, answering my email, all comfy cozy in my nice computer chair when Lucy wanders into my room.  She kept staring at the chair, then she moved around looking at the other chair in here and then the basket that I keep in the corner for her (or the others) to lay in.  She then came back to me and kept looking at my chair.  I know what she wanted.

Needless to say, she's all happy, happy and comfy cozy now and my butt is parked on a hard kitchen chair!  I really want to be a cat in my next life and live with someone like me!

Another Embroidered Wall Quilt

Not be icky or anything but Lucy is the cleanest cat I've ever met!  She cleans herself constantly so once a week, she leaves me a little gift.

If you have cats, then you know what it's like to be woken up at 3 am to the sound of a hairball making it's way to your freshly washed floors!

Needless to say, I took care of the mess and then made coffee.  No point in wasting time so I started a project.

I've been planning on putting together another little wall quilt like the one I made for my pink room last week with the kitty on it.  I had another stamped embroidery piece in my stash and thought it would be perfect for my bedroom.  I think mom gave me this from her stash:

I'm sure you can't tell what the design is....it's an umbrella with flowers.  When I finish stitching it, I'll sew it together using my 1930's reproduction prints.

Anyway, back to Lucy, she's 17 1/2 now and doing great!  Her kidneys are functioning normally with the help of a special diet and special supplement.  Her thyroid is up a little bit but I just started her on a supplement for that and we're hoping the supplement does it's job.  I have to take her back to the clinic for another blood test in 2 months.
