Crazy Trinket Quilt

A few years back, I started a crazy quilt using the little things I've collected my entire life.  Things from my childhood, things that belonged to my grandmothers, little flea market things like vintage jewelry and so on.

I thought I'd take a short break from my McHenry Landmark quilt and work on the Trinket quilt.  I had 2 blocks sewn up from before I had to leave my other house so I pulled them out and this is the first one:

The horse is a pin that belonged to my grandma.  She loved horses and was a rider when she was young.

The pin is wood.  I pinned it onto the block and then anchored the pin-back to the fabric on the back side.

I think I have 38 blocks so far and all are 6 inches square.  The only requirement for this quilt is that all the blocks will be pieced in pastel colors.

I still have a lot of do-dads to use so this is an ongoing project.  There will probably be at least 100 blocks all together.

Here's every block that I've done so far:

McHenry Crazy Quilt Update

Block 23 of my McHenry Crazy Quilt:

This is our first High School built in 1924 on the east side of town.  In the late 1960's, a 2nd High School was built on the west side.

Each block is 9 inches square.  The vintage photos are printed on fabric sheets that run through my printer.

The blocks are pieced entirely by hand on a cotton foundation fabric.

There will be 40 blocks all together.

Most of these buildings are still here although a few have burned down (a long match in my opinion).

I have to get some more photos printed up.  17 blocks to go!!!

McHenry Historical Crazy Quilt

I've just complete Block 22 of the McHenry Crazy Quilt:

This is the old Universalist Church built in 1853.  It still stands today and is the Masonic Lodge.

So far I have 22 9 inch blocks completed.  18 more blocks to go and plenty of old landmarks to document.

The next block will be the old High School which still stands and is still in use.

Here's the quilt so far:

I'm sure I'll rearrange the blocks when I put it together.  But that's another 18 blocks away!

McHenry Crazy Quilt Block 21

I've been slowly working on my McHenry Crazy Quilt which features vintage and antique photos of the landmarks in my area.  I just completed Block #21:

This was the Central Opera House.  There was a store on the main level and then upstairs, was an Opera House.

Sadly, it burned down just a few years ago.  Personally, I think it was a long match but that's just me.  It wouldn't be the first time that's happened in McHenry.  Heartbreaking but at least we have lots of great old photos to remember it.

Here's the entire quilt so far:

Looking at my list of historical buildings, I'm thinking there will be 40 blocks all together.  So 19 more to go.  Each block is 9 inches square and hand pieced on a cotton foundation fabric.

I wanted this one to look as authentically Victorian as possible.  I'm using what I could call Victorian type fabrics in traditional Victorian colors.  No beads, sequins or do-dads on this one.  Any lace that I use is either vintage or antique.  The photos are printed on fabric sheets that go through inkjet printer.

Each block has a spider web on it worked in metallic gold thread and the spider is created with vintage Mother Of Pearl buttons.  The Victorians considered spiders to be good luck!

The lettering is charted out in my cross stitch software and then stitched on the blocks using Waste Canvas which gets removed once the stitching is complete.

So the next block will be our old Universalist Church which thankfully, still stands!

You've Been Asking For These!

Several of my "vintage" designs have been requested!  Makes me laugh that I have to call them vintage.  Actually, they're just some of my designs from years, and years.....ago!

Several people have asked for them so I've re-released them:

Uncle Sam, Kitchen Visitor and Christmas Magic Stocking.

Ask for them at your favorite needlework retail store or find them in my Etsy shop.

New Exclusive Colorful Cats Pattern - Kitty

I've been thinking that I should create an exclusive Colorful Cat design for my shop!

This is the Colorful Cat Kitty!  She's exclusive in my Etsy and Magcloud stores.

Since logo has a black cat on it, I was thinking this cat should be black but that was little too boring for me so I added some pink since pink is my favorite color!!

 Happy Stitching,

The McHenry Quilt = An Update

I was finally able to get back to a little crazy quilting!  If you remember, I started a traditional Victorian Crazy Quilt a few years ago.  The purpose is to document the historical landmarks of McHenry Illinois where I live.

I plan to hang it in my home and use it to promote The McHenry Area Historical Society.  I'm  a board member and the editor of the Facebook page.

So I just finished block #19:

This is the very first Mill in McHenry owned by The Owen Brothers.  It sat on Green St.  Of course it's not there anymore but at least there are a few photos of it floating around.

And here is the whole quilt so far, photoshopped together:

This is a traditional Victorian Crazy Quilt.  Piece by hand on a cotton foundation.  Each block is 9 inches square.  I'm using new fabrics but in colors and type that would be traditional to the Victorian Era.  I'm only use vintage and antique lace.  The only embellishments are the spider on each block made with vintage Mother Of Pearl buttons.

If you click on the photo, you can see a larger version of it.
