July Take It Further Challenge DMC Palette

Sharon B. has released the concept and color scheme for the July Take It Further Challenge. I will talk about my theme for the concept next week.

In the meantime, for those of you who like to work with the DMC colors, I've matched the color Palette up for you:

July TIF Pallette

Please keep in mind that I matched the colors based on both my monitor and a print out. All monitor and printer settings are different. Also, the matches are the closest I could get to the DMC thread colors.

June Take It Further Challenge Completed!

I just finished up on my June Take It Further Challenge block a little while ago:

June TIF Block Completed

I don't think I accomplished my mission here to pile it up with stash though. My story is, I have quite a lot but I need to keep these all working together and this one, at this point, works perfectly with the others so I will let it be now.

My stash consists of a wide variety of do-dads so I tried to use some unusual things on here such as the peacock feather. The millinery flowers and velvet leaves are vintage as are the earrings on either side of the flowers. The tatting is also vintage.

To read my first post on the June block regarding my theme for Sharon's concept, please click here.

I haven't decided what to do next. I have gobs of things I want to do including some ATC's. Will have to do some treadling for those!

June Take It Further Challenge - Day 4

Well, we went back and looked at that piece of property that we found yesterday but it didn't feel right. We found another area that we liked so we'll go back and look at that again next weekend. I have a feeling though, that the first one we found back in May is the right one. That popped into my head earlier today, many times, the first one is the right one. But we'll see.

I was asked where we are in Northern Illinois. We're on the northeast side of McHenry county and we like it here so we're looking in our current area, just a bit more north of where we are now. Ringwood, Richmond, Johnsburg, Spring Grove area. There's still a lot of farmland here and we like that.

On to my Take It Further block for June, I did do some more beading on it yesterday:

June TIF Block

I'm trying to think of some of my more "unusual" stash items that I can add to this. I want to fill this one up to convey the fact that I have more than enough stash for this lifetime and the next! I do however want to keep within the same arena as my other blocks. They all have to work together to make a nice quilt. I guess we'll see where it goes.

I mentioned yesterday that my mom bought me a kit for making Artist's Trading Cards. Scott & I went to Borders this morning to look for books but they didn't have one for fabric & fiber ATC's. I really love collage art but I'm not into the the really spooky weirdo stuff. I like the vintage look a lot. I know that Quilting Arts has one out but Borders didn't have it. I might have to order that from Amazon. In the meantime, here's a Flickr group with Fabric/Fiber ATC's. Lot's of pretty ATC's to look at here!

I also wanted to mention that I started a new group over at Stitchin' Fingers for Collector's of Vintage Iron-On Embroidery Transfers. If you like to collect and stitch from those like I do, hop over and join! Here's the link.

June Take It Further Challenge - Day 3

Well, I didn't get too far on this yesterday and I'm a little tired today so I haven't stitched but I thought you'd like to see the beading I've done so far:

June Take It Further Block

I did work up a couple of tags for the handmade cards that I do so I thought I would share those with you as well:

Tag 6

Tag 7

Click on the images to go to my Flickr site where you can download the large version. Just print them on cardstock, then cut them out and use them on packages or cards. Of course, you add glitter to the edges like I do!

Yesterday, I mentioned our Victorian dream house. I know I've shared this photo before but I thought you would like to see it again:

Our Dream House

I've dreamed of having a Victorian style house since I was 8 years old. Back then, I didn't know the style was called "Victorian", I just know that was what I liked. Anyway, this is our house. It's the most beautiful house I've ever seen!

June Take It Further Challenge - Day 1

Well, I finally got around to starting on my June block for the Take It Further Challenge:

June TIF Block

I'm really not sure how to pile this up with stash but I'll figure that out as I go along.

In other news, my father has been released from all restrictions now. Another ex ray was taken and the break has disappeared! He's free to drive again although he does have to be careful and not push himself. There will still be things that they need to me to but I should have a little more free time now.

June Take It Further Challenge

As I mentioned in my post yesterday, I treadled! And I sewed up my June block for the Take It Further Challenge:

June Take It Further Challenge Block

The colors didn't scan correctly. The center piece is definitely a tan color. It doesn't have a pink tone to it.

Anyway, I glued the peacock feather on using Aleene's Fabric Glue. I brushed the back of the feather with some glue and then laid it down on the block, covered it with a piece of parchment paper and a book for a little while to make sure it was good and on there. Then I took off the book and parchment paper and let it dry the rest of the way over night.

I'd like to start on this today but first, I have a few chores to take care of.

If you'd like to read my first post about the June Challenge, you can find it here.

Take It Further Challenge - June

Sharon B. has posted the concept and color palette for the June Take It Further Challenge. I must admit, I'm going to have to stretch my imagination again for this one!

The concept is stash and stories that are and the stories that are possible regarding stash.

Does my stash have a story? You betcha! And I was recently reminded of it while reorganizing it. To be honest, I have way more than I will ever use. But I won't go into too many personal details. I seem to be on a path of self-actualization here and am discovering all sorts of interesting things about myself. Many of them, I don't care for. But it is what it is and all I can do is accept it and move on.

With that said, I have no idea how to execute the story of my stash. The only thing I can think of is to load up my block with everything I have but the kitchen sink! There is a pun in that statement that you'll get if you hop over to Sharon's blog and read her post on this months challenge.

In the meantime, I've matched the DMC floss colors up to Sharon's palette:

TIF June palette

This one was a tough! That last gray color is not exact. It's the closest I could get based on DMC's floss colors. This is really just a guide to help other's who joined in on the challenge.

As always, my medium is crazy quilting and my block will be 9 inches square. At the end of the year, I intend to sew my blocks into a wall quilt. I doubt I'll have time to sew this block up right away. I expect it may have to wait until next week.

My father is still doing very well. He's walking only with a cane now. He asked me to take him up to WalMart today so I did. It'll still be a few more weeks before he can drive so I'll continue to do errands for my parents as well as my own and I'm still in the process of cleaning out closets and cupboards.

May Take It Further Challenge Completed!

I must say, I was really starting to feel like I've been stitching on this forever! I've just had a lot on my plate this month but I finished it up last night just before the ballgame:

Take It Further May Completed!

Sharon's concept for the May Take It Further Challenge was "How Do You Define Yourself As An Artist?"

As I explained in my first post on the May Challenge, I prefer not to define myself by any labels. To me, that's "ego stuff". Instead, I consider myself to be a channel through which the creativity of the Universal Mind flows.

So instead of working with a focal point theme as I have on the previous challenges, I chose to let this block just go where ever it decided to go. As you can see, it's rather abstract with some feminine qualities. And I must say, it works quite nicely with the other challenge blocks that I've done. If you would like to see them all together, you can find them here.

If you're new to my blog and wondering what I plan to do with my challenge blocks, I decided in the beginning that when the challenge was over, I would sew all of my blocks into a nice wall quilt. My blocks are all 9 inches square so I'm thinking of 3 rows across and 4 rows down.

The rhinestone pin in the top left-hand corner is vintage. Ironically, I just bought that at an antique mall about 2 months ago. I wasn't sure what I was going to do with it but when I saw the palette for this month, I knew that pin would work perfectly!

All of the buttons are vintage glass buttons. The large one is a Lacy Glass Button and several are Moonglows.

And speaking of buttons, a serious weakness of mine! I'm going to go back now to my Button Quilt! At least I'll do a block or two. I'm wanting a new purse for Summer too! But I thought I'd do another button block. This will be block #24:

Button Block 24

I'm going to clean out a closet now and then I'll just relax and stitch for awhile. If you would like to see the button blocks that I've done so far, click here.

May Take It Further Challenge - Day 4

I did some more beading on this yesterday:

Take It Further May

I'm not sure where to go with now. I'm thinking of a fan in the bottom left-hand corner and maybe some SRE and some buttons.

For my cross stitch readers, don't forget, I still have a couple of cross stitch fabric packs available in my Etsy shop:

Evenweave Grab Bag

These are from my mom's stash.

May Take It Further Challenge - Day 2

The seams are stitched now so next I can start on some beading:

Take It Further May

I also decided to go with the vintage crystal pin that I mentioned last week. I haven't sewn it down yet, just in case I decide to move it. I always wait until I'm almost done before sewing jewelry down.

Anyway, I should be able to stitch on this a little more later.

I also thought you would enjoy seeing the little cat doll that I made for my friend Kim:

Kims Cat

I always send Kim a little something around Mother's Day.

And speaking of Mother's Day, this is one of the Mother's Day cards that I made:

Mothers Day Card

I made 6 of these. The pansies are one of my vintage iron-on transfer designs. I printed them in B/W and then colored them with colored pencils. And of course you know, I had to add glitter! The leaves are paper leaves that I bought somewhere awhile back. They're for scrapbooking and cards.

May Take It Further Challenge - Day 1

After visiting with my mom for awhile yesterday, we came home and I had some free time! I started stitching the borders on my May Take It Further block:

I'm home today and trying to get caught up on some cleaning and email! I do expect to have some stitching time later today.

Take It Further May - Block

I finished up my 23rd button block the other day:

Button Block 23

I still have a long way to go on this project as I want it to be quite large. I'm still thinking I'll need between 80 - 100 blocks.

I'll take a break from it for a bit and do my Take It Further block for May. I did a bit of treadling the other day and this is now ready to stitch on:

Take It Further May

My Take It Further blocks will also be sewn into a quilt at the end of the year. As I mentioned in my last post, I don't like to define myself in any way but as a channel through which the creativity of the Universal Mind flows. This block won't have a predetermined theme but instead, will go where ever it goes. I do have a beautiful vintage crystal pin that matches that periwinkle blue fabric perfectly. I'm not sure yet if I'll be using it but it is in the back of my mind.

May Take It Further Challenge

I didn't get around to stitching yesterday so I thought I would talk a little about my Take It Further block for May.

Sharon's concept is: "How Do You Describe Yourself As An Artist?" Be sure to read Sharon's post on this. You can find it here.

I've always defined myself as a designer. Thinking about it though, that's really just a label describing what I do. In all honesty, I prefer not to put myself in any catagory. I see myself simply as a "channel" through which the creativity of the Universal Mind flows. I take that creativity and based on whatever medium I'm working with at the time, I interpret the idea and apply it to the canvas using the skills and techiniques that I have & know.

After much thought, I have decided to let the block develope on it's own and speak for itself. As always, I will work with the color palette that Sharon chose (she graciously accommodated my request for some pink!) I will see where the block goes and what theme presents itself as I stitch on it.

When I read Sharon's post on this, the first thing I thought of was the "silence between the notes" in music. Or the "empty spaces" between written words. Without the silence or the empty spaces, all there would be is chaos. Truthfully, how would we describe the creativity of the Universal Mind? It just is.

I'm hoping to sew up my block today and start my stitching on it tomorrow. I want to finish up my button block with the cat button first.

Button Block #22 Complete

I finished up on this block the other day:

Button Block 22

Be sure to click on the image so you can see that Bird Of Paradise button up close. It's really pretty! I found it on Ebay.

Thanks to everyone who commented about my book. As soon as I have a few free hours, I'll move it over to a Print On Demand service. That's probably what I should have done with it in the first place but I didn't know much about those services then and I'm no computer whiz! I'd much rather be stitching than sitting here researching things. Anyway, when I have things ready, I'll let you know.

In the meantime, Sharon B. has posted the Take It Further Challenge concept for May along with the color palette. And she graciously accommodated my request for some pink! I'll talk more about my theme in the next couple of days. I'm planning on sewing up my block either on Monday or Tuesday. For those of you who enjoy using the DMC Floss Color matchups, here they are:

April Take It Further Block Completed

After a little more beading and a few little do-dads, I have now completed my April Take It Further Challenge block:

April Take It Further Completed

Just to rehash this project, Sharon's concept for April is, "how do you see change?". Although I used to avoid it at all costs, I like to think now that I welcome it.

I've chosen for each month to work with both Sharon's concept and her color palette. The palette for April had a very Autumn/Winter feel to me. You can see it in the foundation fabrics of my block. Winter is one season I can live without! Since I completely welcome the change of Winter Into Spring, my personal challenge was to turn this block from that Autumn/Winter look, into a Spring/Summer look. My focal point is a butterfly which in my opinion, is the epitome of change. I strayed from the color palette with my threads intentionally.

Although I struggled with this block in the beginning, I do feel that I accomplished my mission and I am quite pleased with it.

In other news, I'm back to my Button Quilt for now:

Button Block 16

I expect to finish this one up later today. First, I have a few chores to take care of.

April Take It Further Challenge - Day 3

As you can see, I found a butterfly that works on this block:

April Take It Further Block

And I didn't even have to go beyond my own stash! I bought this pin at the last Flea Market we went to and completely forgot about it because I intended to use it on a purse. It's so perfect for this block, so I decided to just use it.

I expect to finish this one up later today. It needs a spider web, a little more beading and a few little "fill-in" do-dads.

This will be my next button block:

Button Block 16

I'm not sure if I'll get to starting on this today or not but if not, it's ready for tomorrow.

A few years back for Christmas, a friend of mine sent me this card of beautiful vintage Lacy Glass Buttons:

Vintage Lacy Glass Buttons

I could never bring myself to use these, although that was his intention. I pulled them out yesterday and they're so beautiful, it seems ashame to keep them wrapped up in quilt batting and sitting in the drawer. They aren't doing me or anyone else any good being hidden away. So, I've decided to use them on my Button Quilt. One of those red/gold buttons should work quite nicely on this cream colored block.

Take It Further April - Day 2

Yesterday morning, I looked at this block and almost decided to scrap it and start from scratch. I just wasn't happy with how it was turning out although I do love how it pieced up:

April Take It Further Block Day 2

When I came home from visiting with my sister, I looked at it again and a famous quote by Henry Ford popped into my head. He said, "Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, either way, you're right."

Then, one of my father-in-law's 'words of wisdom' came to me. "Can't never did nothin'!"

I decided to go with the flow and see what happened.

I grabbed my tin of Dyna-flo Dyes by Jacquard and painted those lace pieces. As you can see, that seemed to do the trick. It brought everything together and now I feel as if my mission to turn Autumn/Winter into Spring/Summer has been accomplished.

Judy asked me how to go about painting lace. It's actually quite simple. First, I use the Dyna-flo dyes (which are available at Michaels) because they come in small bottles and I only paint what I need each time. I never do a whole bunch at once.

Step 1 is to wet your lace. Lay it out on paper towels so the excess water is absorbed. After a minute or so, move the lace to dry paper towels. I like to mix several variations of colors. If you look closely at the Iris, you can see that there is some warm purple in there and some soft blue-purple. I just think this adds a more interesting look.

You'll want to water the dye down with a drop or 2 of water. Remember, you can add more color later if it comes out too light.

Because the lace is wet, it will pull the color in from the brush. Keep in mind too, that it will dry lighter than it looks when it's wet. Practice on a piece of cotton fabric first so you can see how the wet fabric absorbs the color from the brush.

Once the piece is done, you can let it air dry and then heat set it with your iron or you can iron it dry. Since I have nothing in the way of patience, I put my pieces in the microwave to dry. I start with 1 minute at 50% power. Then another minute at 50% power. Then I do 30 seconds at 50% power until it's dry. Textiles will burn, even in the microwave so it has be done a little at a time. And trust me, there is nothing that smells worse than burning lace!

Keep in mind too that natural fibers take the dye much better than synthetic fibers. Polyester is not a good choice for hand-painting with dye.

If you're wanting an old, antique look, you can add a bit of yellow and/or brown to your color. It's a matter of experimenting to get the look you want. Like I said, you can practice on a piece of plain cotton fabric to get a feel for it before you try it on your appliques.

Today, my goal is to find a butterfly that will show up on this block. I don't care if it's new or vintage but that's our quest for after breakfast.

April Take It Further Block - Day 1

I started stitching on this yesterday:

April Take It Further Block

I'm not any too thrilled with it so far. I'm sure some more stitching will help and I'll be painting the lace pieces as well. I didn't want to do that until I had some stitching on it. I just wasn't sure what colors to go with. I actually just pulled some Perle cottons in warm pastel colors thinking that those are the colors of Spring flowers. Stayed tuned to see where this goes.

I also have a bit of show & tell for you today. I made this little cellphone pouch for Kim who's birthday was Wednesday:

Hummingbird Cellphone Pouch

I bought the little hummingbird pin at a flea market last Summer. I've been saving it for a pouch for Kim.

I also made a few cards the other day. Commercial greeting cards are just too mushy and wordy for my tastes. I really prefer to just add a little hand-written note:

Cards 1

I tinted the images myself on my computer and then used some of these on CQ's awhile back.

I also made these:

Cards 2

As you can see, I got a little "artsy" on this set!

Button Block 15 & TIF April

I finished up on this one yesterday:

Button Block 15

The black buttons are Victorian glass buttons. I had an issue with the big one. I went to sew it on and found that the shank was missing. I was determined to use it!

I thought of 2 different options for attaching it to the block. First, I thought about gluing a piece of ultra suede to the back and then sewing that on. That seemed too time consuming though.

My next idea, and the one I used, was to sew on a plain boring button and then glue the glass button to it. I used E6000 Jewelry Glue and it worked perfectly!

Judy asked me about the fabric at the bottom with the shiny things on it. That fabric is the stuff with the sequins glued on. It comes in a ton of different colors and because I love my glitter, I have a bunch of it.

I haven't used it too often because my electric machine has a cow every time I do. Electric machines are pretty fast and I think the friction of the needle going through the fabric melts the sequins and gums up my needle.

The treadle machine is a bit slower and couldn't care less what it sews through! So you'll be seeing more of that in upcoming projects.

I'm going to take a break from the Button Crazy Quilt and do my Take It Further April block next:

April Take It Further Block

As I mentioned in my first post the other day, Sharon's concept is "How Do You Feel About Change?" Basically, do you welcome it or avoid it?

Well, I welcome it. As long as it isn't the change of Autumn to Winter!

As with all of my blocks for this project, I am working with both the concept and the color palette. When I saw the colors, I immediately though of Autumn/Winter. My intention will be to change this block into Spring. At this moment, I have no clue about how I'm going to do that!

I did decide that instead of a bird as a focal point, I'm going to use a butterfly. Butterflies are the epitome of change. They also represent "hope" and "freedom".

I went through my vintage jewelry pieces and I have some beautiful butterfly pins but they don't show up well on this block. Scott and I are going to see if we can find something usable this weekend.

Stay tuned. This one is a real challenge!

Take It Further Challenge - April

As is the norm on the first of each month, Sharon B. released the concept and color palette for the Take It Further Challenge. The concept for April is "How Do You See Change?" Basically, is "change" welcome or avoided?

Until recently, I avoided change. I was set in my ways, very routine and regimented and I resisted it. Over the last couple of years though, I've come to welcome it. We can't avoid change. Every thought, every idea, every desire, every fear, every bit of information we gather and every observation we have contributes to change. We expand whether we want to or not. It's evolution and it's inevitable. It's the nature of reality.

That of course is "internal change". But our outer world is a reflection of our inner world. As above, so below. It's Manifest Destiny so to speak.

I have already chosen my theme based on Sharon's concept. The color palette that Sharon chose reminds me of the rusts and browns of Autumn and Winter (when there isn't any snow on the ground). Because I have come to welcome change, the title of my piece will be "Winter Into Spring".

As always, I will work with Sharon's color palette. This time I will use it only as the foundation for my block. My stitching will reflect the pastel colors of Spring as new life gradually emerges from the dark days of Winter.

For those of you who like to work with the color palette as well, here it is with the DMC Embroidery Floss #'s:

TIF April Palette

Please keep in mind that I matched these based on my monitor settings. All monitors are different. At first, that dark color looked like black to me. When I looked at it in my image software, I suspected that it was actually dark green. I let my computer figure that one out and yes indeed, it is a dark green.

I'll be treadling today. I want to get this block pieced up and ready to stitch. I haven't decided on a focal point yet. I'm thinking of bird, maybe a robin. I'm going to go through my vintage jewelry pieces and see what I have that I can use. If I don't have anything that will work, I may just embroider a robin on the block.

Stay tuned to see where this goes!
