Update On Mom

Mom is doing well.  Still in pain but doing well.  Kathi & I spent yesterday afternoon with mom.  When I left, she was watching QVC and looking through some of my Somerset Studio magazines.

Mom

The surgery went well.  2 vertebrae were removed and a metal plate was put in to relieve a pinched nerve.  Mom has to wear a neck brace for 3 months.  Still trying to figure out how to wash mom's hair for her.  She can't bend over and she can't take the brace off.  The brace goes up the back of her head.  I'm open to suggestions!

I'd like to thank everyone for your sweet emails.  Your kind wishes mean so much to Mom & me!  Thank you!

  2. DEAR PAM,
I AM SO VERY SORRY TO HEAR OF YOUR PRECIOUS MOM'S SURGERY. I HAVE BEEN AWAY FROM MY BLOG FOR 11 DAYS.
ON WASHING HER HAIR....THEY HAVE SOME REALLY GOOD MOIST HAIR SHAMPOO THAT YOU DO NOT HAVE TO RINSE OUT. GO TO ONE OF YOUR MAJOR PHARMACIES THAT HAS HOME CARE PRODUCTS....HAVING BEEN A NURSE I KNOW OF NO OTHER WAY TO DO IT WITH HER RESTRICTIONS
TELL HER SHE IS IN MY THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS AND WILL SEND A CARD TO YOU FOR HER. I WON'T MAKE IT FUNNY BECAUSE I KNOW IT MUST HURT TO LAUGH.
I LOVED HER PART ONE OF HER BI-POLAR POST. IT WILL HELP A LOT OF PEOPLE. HER CHILDHOOD MAKES ME SO SAD.
HUGS AND LOVE TO YOU BOTH.

THE CAT TUSSIE MUSSIE IS STUNNING. YOUR MOTHER DID AN AWESOME JOB. BEAUTIFUL WORK.

  3. I am a home health aide and I wash hair in the bed and wheel chair all the time. Pretty easy to do. If she is in bed, place a towel under her head. Using a washcloth, wet her hair down. The washcloth should be wrung out but not like you would if you were washing your face. It can take 5 or 6 times doing this. Then shampoo her hair. Don't use lots of shampoo. Then use the washcloth again to get the shampoo out. Make sure you rinse out the washcloth several times when rinsing out her hair. Towel dry. If she is in a wheelchair it can be done the same way, just put a towel around her shoulders.
If you are worried about getting all the shampoo out, you can actually use Barbasol shaving cream instead of shampoo.
    Hope that helps!

  4. Look in the baby department at the grocery. They have some gentle shampoos that can be used on a damp wash cloth. Tell Mom Hi! I am glad she is on the mend. Will she be able to stitch with the neck brace on?

  10. I didn't realize the surgery was so extensive - wow - she's doing so well to be home already! I don't know if I can be of much help with the hair washing but I seem to remember there used to be a dry shampoo you could get that you simply had to apply and then brush out. I don't know if it's still around though. If you have a drugstore nearby that has a section for home care perhaps they can suggest something. Say hi to her for me and wish her a speedy recovery.

  11. Wow, I am so sorry I forgot your mum was having surgery. Please give her a hug for me. I am glad it went well, but I know it must be uncomfortable for her. Fingers crossed it causes her minimal disruptions on the way to getting back to normal.

  12. Pam, I also didn't realise she was having vertebrae REMOVED, that's pretty scary surgery. I hope the result is good for her, nothing worse than nerve problems in the back, my DH has had 3 surgeries and this one is option B if the full laminectomy doesn't help. I join everyone else in sending hugs and well wishes,
from across the Pacific to you both

  13. When my Mom was in the hospital for open heart surgery at 92 (!) one nurse put a "shampoo cap" on her and massaged. I don't remember if she added water to it. It looked like a shower cap and did a great job.

    Best wishes for your Mom!
